Bushwalking Blog began when I started hiking regularly back in 2008. I wanted to keep a record of my adventures and, realising how difficult it was to find solid information about hiking online, I wanted to include as much info as possible in my blog posts, in order to make things easier for others.
In 2011, I realised that readers wanted more, and decided to expand the scope of Bushwalking Blog… It became a place to read about all things hiking, from how-tos and trip reports, to news, outdoors photography, safety, and gear reviews. This also meant more regular posts and has led to an ever-growing and more engaged audience.
2013 was a big year for Bushwalking Blog. I was Nuffnang’s June Featured Blogger, a finalist in the Australian Writers’ Centre’s Best Blogs 2013 competition, and then (I nearly fell over when) I was announced as winner of the Healthy Lifestyle category in BUPA’s 2013 Health Influencer Blog Awards (link removed by BUPA). I finished up the year with an international award nomination, in the “Best in show: Blog” category of WEGO Health’s Health Activist Awards, and another for Most Adventurous Walking Website in a roundup of the best walking websites by Consumer Walking Shoes.
I also launched a PLB hire service in late 2013, which has been quite successful and has already seen my two PLBs travel much further afield than I have.
So far this year, I’ve been named as one of ChilliSauce’s Top 100 Travellers to follow on Social Media for 2014, and one of the top 50 Australian and New Zealand Travel Bloggers by Pretraveller.
Update: This about page hasn’t been updated since 2014, but I’ll get there soon. I’ve been featured in a whole bunch more ‘top blogs’ and ‘blogs to watch’ lists, but my biggest news is the launch of AussieHikingTours.com. Read all about it here. I’ve also recently been featured in Smartlad’s Top Outdoor Blogs You Can Read For Inspiration in 2017.
If you’re looking for a hike to do, or you’re stuck behind a computer and in need of a virtual hiking-fix, make sure you bookmark Bushwalking Blog, sign-up for the e-mail newsletter, or get updates via the RSS feed, Facebook or Twitter.
