If hiking to the summit of Mount Bogong is one of those things you’ve always meant to do, the time has (almost) come. Bogong Conquestathon is back for its 37th year on Sunday the 8th of March, 2015.
A fun and family-friendly hiking event, Conquestathon isn’t meant to be a race. For some it’s about beating their own personal best time (and many trail runners do take part), but for most it’s just a fun day out with family or friends and the perfect excuse to hike Victoria’s highest mountain while supporting the Kiewa Valley Lions Club.
On the day, volunteers will be posted at checkpoints along the trail to ensure that all entrants are accounted for. Anyone new(ish) to hiking, who might otherwise be wary of taking on a hike like this, might find this a good way to get some experience under more controlled conditions.
I took part in the 2012 Conquestathon (have a read of my blog post for a better idea of what’s in store) and it was a great day out. Heading up the mountain via Staircase Spur to take in the summit, and descending on Eskdale Spur, it’s definitely one of the most beautiful and challenging day-hikes I’ve done in Victoria.
If you’re keen to take part, you can download an entry form right here. Entry is $20 for an adult (16+), $10 for a junior, or $50 for a family.
