As a long-time lover of RocKwiz, I quite like the idea of going for a hike with Julia Zemiro.

So I’m pretty excited about the announcement that SBS is set to launch a new 10-part documentary series – Great Australian Walks with Julia Zemiro. Premiering on Thursday, August 10th at 7.30pm on SBS and SBS On Demand (which is good, because I’d have to get the TV out of the garage otherwise).

In a celebration of travel, hiking, history, culture and the sheer beauty of this country we call home, acclaimed actor, presenter and comedian Julia Zemiro will explore ten of Australia’s most picturesque and historically significant walks. From the insanely beautiful views atop Tasmania’s Mount Wellington and Melbourne’s Yarra Trail to the Kiama Coast Walk and the cliff tops of the Blue Mountains, Great Australian Walks will take viewers across the eastern states’ most iconic bush and urban landscapes.

Each episode focuses on a different trail, handpicked with the help of travel journalist and veteran walks expert Bruce Elder. These walks are not only accessible and achievable in a day but also deeply immersed in stories that define our multicultural nation. As viewers follow Zemiro’s journey, they will encounter a variety of guests, including historians, local legends, First Australians, and new Australians, who will share surprising and inspiring tales about Australia’s vibrant landscapes.

Expect to see familiar faces such as actor Tasma Walton, former Wallabies Captain and Independent Senator for the ACT David Pocock, Bassist for the Violent Femmes & Mona Music Brian Ritchie, and author and journalist Brigid Delaney, among others.

The show also promises to be a historical journey, with archival footage woven in to breathe life into each walk.

“It’s truly a beautiful feeling to have experienced these walks after the pandemic. They encompass the grandness of our landscapes right down to the tiny details – from high above rainforest canopies down to the tiny insects on the ground that sustain life itself,” Zemiro says.

It looks set to be a must-watch for anyone who loves the outdoors, history and culture, or just wants to enjoy an armchair journey through our great southern land.

Great Australian Walks with Julia Zemiro promises to be a memorable trek, so set yourself a reminder for August 10th.

Don’t forget to gear up with The Bushwalking Blog for a closer look at each trail after every episode. Let’s explore, learn, and appreciate the rich beauty of Australia, one walk at a time.
